الصداق
‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb reported from his father who reported from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is given before marriage as a dowry or gift, or promised, belongs to the woman. Whatever is given after marriage belongs to whoever it is given to. And the best way to honor a person is (to honor) his daughter or sister."

The Hadīth means that if a husband gives something to his wife or to one of her relatives before writing the marriage contract, it shall belong to his wife, not anyone else, even if it is given to one of her relatives. This is because the gift is given for the sole purpose of the forthcoming marriage. This applies whether the gift is from the dowry or a gift, or a promise made by the husband, even if it is has not yet been delivered. However, if something is given to any of the wife’s relatives, such as her father, brother, uncle, etc., after the marriage contract has been finalized, it shall be kept by whoever it is given to, because the marriage has already taken place, and completing the marriage would not be the reason why the relative was given that gift. Indeed, honoring your wife's relatives is customary, loved, and recommended, because they have become your own relatives, and maintaining good relationship with relatives is required. However, it should be noted that this Hadīth is weak and this commentary is just to explain its meaning.
