A "surah" (chapter) is a set of Qur’anic verses that has a beginning and an end under a special name. The shortest surah consists of three verses. The Qur’an comprises one hundred and fourteen surahs varying in length. They are arranged in the Uthmanic codex starting with Surat al-Faatihah (the Opening) and finishing with Surat an-Naas (the People).
''Surah'': status, high standing, tall and beautiful buildings. Derived from “soor”, which means highness, elevation. Other meanings: fence, eminence, sign, degree.
