Invoking other than Allah, the Almighty, to do such things that only Allah, the Exalted, can do, like removing distress or bringing benefits.
الشرح المختصر
"Shirk ad-da‘wah" (polytheism of supplication): Indeed, supplication is one of the greatest forms of worship; rather, it is the core of worship. Therefore, its dedication to other than Allah is polytheism. So whoever supplicates a Prophet, a king, a pious servant of Allah, a grave, a stone, or any other created being is a polytheist and disbeliever.
