المعنى الاصطلاحي

A science that deals with counting the number of verses in a certain surah or in the entire Qur’an, along with identifying the beginning and the end of each verse.

الشرح المختصر

"‘Add al-āy" (counting verses) is one of the sciences of the Qur’an. It is a technique that is concerned with the verses of the Qur’an in terms of mentioning the number of verses in a specific surah, or the number of verses in all surahs, and identifying the beginning and end of each verse. The principle factor in this science is "tawqeef", i.e. textual report from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. So it is not up to anyone to determine where a given verse starts. "Āy" (verses) is the plural of "āyah", which constitutes a portion of the Qur’an that has a beginning and an end and that is included in a certain surah.
