A name designated for a Jew or a Christian.

الشرح المختصر

There are three categories of Disbelievers: 1. People who have a Book; Jews, Christians, and sects conforming to the fundamentals of their religions. They could be Arabs or non-Arabs, at war with Muslims, or under their protection. Their parents or one of them could be Jewish, Christian, or otherwise. 2. People who have a possible book, such as the Magians. 3. People who have no possible book or no book at all. Apart from the above two categories, this category includes idol worshippers, hypocrites, heretics, etc. What is meant by a Jew is someone who believes in the distorted religion of Judaism, which is attributed to Moses, peace be upon him. There are many Jewish sects, including the Pharisees, Sadducees, Samaritans, and others. What is meant by a Christian is someone who believes in the distorted religion of Christianity, which is attributed to Jesus, peace be upon him. There are many Christians sects, including Melkites, Nestorians, Jacobites, and others. Some Muslim scholars have said that is a condition of people being of the People of the Book is that they adhere to their faith and the laws of their religion. If they discard their faith, they are no longer People of the Book, according to some modern Christian atheists.
