المعنى الاصطلاحي
Sūrat al-Fātihah; the first surah in the written Qur’an, and the first surah recited in prayer.
الشرح المختصر
"Umm al-Kitāb" (the Mother of the Book) is Sūrat al-Fātihah. It was called thus because it encompasses the fundamental meanings of the Qur’an, and because prayer is invalid without reciting it, and because it is the opening surah of the Qur’an. Some said that it was thus called because it is the greatest surah in the Qur’an.
