mother of the Book (أُمُّ الكِتَاب)

A name given to Surah al-Fātiḥah. It is given this name because it is the first surah in the written copies of the Qur'an.

الشرح المختصر :
"Umm al-Kitāb" (the Mother of the Book) is Sūrat al-Fātihah. It was called thus because it encompasses the fundamental meanings of the Qur’an, and because prayer is invalid without reciting it, and because it is the opening surah of the Qur’an. Some said that it was thus called because it is the greatest surah in the Qur’an.
