Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any of you yawns, let him put his hand over his mouth."

شرح الحديث :

In this Hadīth, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the hand to be put over the mouth when yawning. It is even better to try to suppress the yawn if possible, by placing the hand over the mouth. "Otherwise the devil will enter", meaning: the devil will enter through the mouth when it is open and yawning, and he will be laughing after entering. This is prevented by putting the hand over the mouth, so as to stop the devil and block his way. The Hadīth indicates the dislike of yawning in a manner that pleases the devil.
