Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only one who is in a state of ablution should call to the prayer."

شرح الحديث :

This Hadīth indicates a requirement that is to be fulfilled by the one who wants to call the Adhān: to be in a state of purity. However, this Hadīth is weak. It is not a condition that the one who calls to the prayer be in a state of purity. Nevertheless, it is certainly better, because the call to the prayer involves mentioning Allah, Glorified and Exalted. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I dislike to mention Allah except in a state of purity." [Abu Dawūd and Ahmad]
