Anything that is worshiped other than Allah.
"Rujz" (idols/punishment) is a name that generally refers to all that which is worshiped besides Allah Almighty, whether they are inanimate, like statues and idols, or whatever else. Allah Almighty says (what means): {And keep away from the "rujz" (the idols)!} [Al-Muddaththir: 5] Abandoning "rujz" means shunning them and disassociating oneself from those who worship them. It is also said that "rujz" is a name for all statements and actions that entail punishment. It may also mean all evil acts, and thus the command in the verse includes giving up minor and major sins, the apparent and hidden thereof. So, giving up polytheism and what is less than it are included.
"Rijz": punishment, the act that leads to punishment. Original meaning: disorder and deviation. Other meanings: Satan’s whispers, idols, idolatry.
