A Kharijite sect named after ‘Atiyyah ibn al-Aswad al-Hanafi.
"‘Atawiyyah" is a sect from the "Khawārij" (Kharijites) that is ascribed to ‘Atiyyah ibn al-Aswad al-Hanafi, who split from the sect "Najdāt" after he denounced some of their beliefs. ‘Atiyyah fled to Sijistān in Persia. He gained some followers, who are the Kharijites of Sijistān. They became widespread there and ruled a couple of short times. It is of their beliefs to call someone who persistently sins a disbeliever, whether they are minor or major sins. There are fifteen other sects that branched off from "‘Atawiyyah"; they are called "‘Ajāridah."
"‘Atawiyyah": ascribed to ‘Atiyyah. This term refers to the sect itself. It is named "‘Atawiyyah," because they followed a man named "‘Attiyyah ibn al-Aswad, whom they are named after.
