Considering a two-sided thing, and approaching it from the side that one wills.
"Ikhtiyaar" (choice) means tending to something that vacillates between existence and nonexistence, which is within the doer's capability to favor one side over the other. In this case, one looks at the two sides and chooses one of them.
"Ikhtiyaar": choosing, selecting. "Istikhaarah": seeking the best of two matters. Original meaning of "khiyaar": inclining to something. Other meanings: preferring, electing, giving weight to, being content (with something), willing.
To draw a balance between two options and prefer one under no pressure.
