التعريف :

A recommended prayer with an odd number of rakꜤahs to conclude night prayers. Its time range extends from the conclusion of the ꜤIsha obligatory prayer to the break of dawn.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

An odd-"rak‘ah" (unit of prayer) prayer performed between the ‘Ishā’ prayer and the break of dawn to conclude the night prayer.

الشرح المختصر :

"Salāt al-Witr" (Witr prayer) is a prayer performed during the night after the ‘Ishā’ prayer and before the break of dawn to conclude the night prayer. The minimum units of prayer required for it is one "rak‘ah", and the maximum is eleven "rak‘ahs". It was named thus because the number of its "rak‘ahs" is odd; being either one, three, five, or the like.
