Those who read the Torah. They are a group of Jews which is widely different from Talmudic Judaism. They reject the rabbis’ additions to Moses scriptures. They only recognise the old testament or the Pentateuch, and deny the Talmud and other oral scriptures. They believe in the resurrection on the day of judgement. Their founder Anan acknowledged Jesus and Muhammad as prophets, but he claimed that Muhammad was a prophet sent to the Arabs, not to the Jews. There is deep-seated enmity between them and the Talmudic Jews, with each group denouncing the other as unbelievers. A few thousand of them still reside near Tel Aviv in Palestine. They have their separate feasts, courts and slaughter places. The present law of Talmudic government in Israel prohibits intermarriage between the Karaites and other Jews.
