An esoteric sect, the followers of Ḥamdān Qarmaṭ ibn al-AshꜤath. They adopt a secret military organisation. They claim to be Shia supporting the prophet’s household and that they are affiliated to Muhammad ibn IsmāꜤīl ibn JaꜤfar al-Ṣādiq, but in reality, they embrace atheism, permissiveness, immorality and try to undermine any Islamic state. They allege that Islamic religious texts have inner meanings that are different from what they apparently imply, giving explanations that are totally contrary to religion, reason and linguistic meaning.
