It is the answer to the question "what is it?", which helps one visualize something.
"Maahiyyah" (essence) is the conception formed in the mind, whether it is of something that exists on the outside or not. Ahlus-Sunnah (Muslims who hold fast to the way of the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, his Companions, and those who followed their path in beliefs, speech, and actions) affirm a "maahiyyah", meaning essence, to Allah, the Exalted. It refers to His true nature that is unique to Him and by which He is distinct from everything else; and it is the essence of His lordship.
"Maahiyyah": noun derived from the phrase "maa hiya", which literally means "what is it?". It refers to the reality and nature of something. Other meanings: existence.
What is suitable as an answer to the question, ‘what is it?’ Enabling the questioner to visualise it. It is therefore called reality.
