المعنى الاصطلاحي

A Companion's statement or deed that evidence leads to the presumption that it originated from the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, by way of inference.

الشرح المختصر

"Marfoo`u hukman": one category of Marfoo`u Hadith. It has the status of being ascribed to the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, due to a sign that indicates this. It is called as such, because it is a tradition reported from the Companions. However, it is ascribed to the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, by the scholars’ "hukm", i.e. judgement, whether it is authentic, weak, fabricated, or fair. There are of five types of "Marfoo`u hukman": 1. The Qur'an and the Sunnah said nothing about the deeds of the Companions during the time of revelation, although these deeds were not witnessed by the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. 2. A Companion saying: “We were commanded to do such-and-such.” 3. A Companion saying: “We were forbidden to do such-and-such.” 4. A Companion saying something that is not open to independent reasoning, such as matters of the unseen. 5. A “taabi`i” saying that a Companion “rafa`ahu (attributed it)” or “ballagha bi-hi (communicated it)”, or states at the beginning of the narration that it is “marfoo`u (attributed to the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)”.
