Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that this verse was revealed about the people of Qubā': {Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 108] The Prophet asked them, and they answered: "We wash ourselves with water after cleansing ourselves with stones."

This Hadīth reveals one of the good traits which the people of Qubā' had. They loved to purify themselves, as the Qur’an attested to them. When they were asked about the reason, they said that they cleanse themselves with stones first, and then with water, when they answer the call of nature, in order to ensure the removal of any traces of impurity. The Hadīth is weak. There is no authentic proof for combining both cleansing with stones and water. However, it is permissible, because, in principle, it is permissible as long as nothing prevents it.
