Abu Ad-Dardā’ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of the supplications of Dawūd was: O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the deeds that will lead me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than the cold water!"

Prophet Dawūd (peace be upon him) asked his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, to grant him His love, the love of His close servants, and the love of the righteous deeds that would draw him nearer to the Almighty Lord and make him attain His love. He further asked Allah to make Dawūd's love for Him greater than Dawūd's love for himself, his family, his wealth, and cold water.
