A major Christian sect that follows Martin Luther who in the sixteenth century advocated a break with the catholic church, believing that a person is accountable only to God. Protestants follow the bible and consider that every qualified person may understand it. Evangelical, Baptist and other churches are part of Protestantism, which is separate from the roman catholic and eastern orthodox churches.
