separation (الفَاصِل)

What invalidates a particular feature of a sound, separating it from its cause. Had it not been for such separation, the feature would have applied. An example is the velarized sounds when they separate the ‘r’ sound from the letter preceding it which has no short vowel. These velarized sounds prevent the ‘r’ sound being soft, as in ‘alladhi rtaḍā lahum’ (24: 55).
