Ubayy ibn ‘Imārah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, can I wipe over leather socks?" He said: 'Yes.' I said: "For two days?" He said: 'Yes.' I said: "And for three?" He said: "Yes, and as you wish."
Ubayy ibn ‘Imārah (may Allah be pleased with him) informs us in this Hadīth that he asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling on wiping over leather socks, and he declared it permissible. Then he asked him about the time period during which wiping is permissible, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) advised that this is permissible for a day, two days, three days, or as long as one wishes. However, this Hadīth was classified as weak by most scholars, and hence it cannot be regarded as reliable evidence. The evidence lies in the authentic Prophetic reports suggesting that a non-traveler may wipe over his leather socks for a day and a night and a traveler for three days and nights.
