Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should offer prayer in a single garment that does not cover his shoulders."

شرح الحديث :

What is required of a person performing the prayer is to look his best, since Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿O offspring of Adam! Take your adornment at every mosque﴾ [Sūrat al-A‘rāf: 31]. That is why the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) discouraged the one praying from praying with his shoulders uncovered while he has something to cover one or both of them with. He forbade praying in this condition while one is standing before Allah addressing Him. According to this Hadīth, covering both shoulders is obligatory in case of ability. The narration: "His shoulder" carries the meaning of both shoulders.
