al-Najjāriyyah (النَّجَّاْرِيَّة)

العقيدة

التعريف :

One of the groups branching out of al-Jabriyyah al-Murjiʾah, the followers of al-Ḥusayn ibn Muhammad al-Najjār. They share with the MuꜤtazilah the beliefs negating God’s attributes, confirmation of God’s oneness, his will and generosity. They differ with the MuꜤtazilah on the concept of the divine decree, and they endorse the concept of delay, i.e. irjāʾ. They agree with the AshꜤariyyah on the concept of earning. They claim that faith, i.e. imān, neither increases nor decreases. They allege that God is everywhere, without incarnation or having a direction, and that he is always generous as miserliness does not apply to him. He is always a speaker, meaning that he is not unable to speak. His word is a creation, separate from God who creates his speech in some entity.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

A group of extremist Murji’ah who follow Husain an-Najjaar.

الشرح المختصر :

“An-Najjaariyyah” is one of the major Muslim sects that went astray in terms of faith, divine attributes, and destiny. They are the followers of Husain ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullaah an-Najjaar, who passed away in 220 A.H. Some scholars classified this group as Jahmite, while others labeled them as Mu‘tazilah. Still some others regarded them as Murji’ah. The reality is that they are a mix of various doctrines and sects. The beliefs of “An-Najjaariyyah” include the following: 1. Faith is knowledge of Allah and His Messengers and obligations, and acknowledging that by the tongue. Actions are not part of faith. 2. Faith increases but does not decrease. 3. Allah is everywhere by Himself – Exalted be He above what they say. 4. The divine attributes do not actually exist in the Self of Allah, the Almighty. 5. The speech of Allah is something newly introduced and created. 6. Human beings are under compulsion and do not possess power or free will. “An-Najjaariyyah” branched out into three sub-sects: “Al-Burghoothiyyah”, “Az-Za‘fraaniyyah”, and “Al-Mustadrikah”. Each of them declares the others as disbelievers.
