The twelfth month of the Hijri calendar, after Dhul-Qa‘dah

الشرح المختصر

"Dhul-Hijjah" is the twelfth month of the lunar year. It is called thus because it is the month of Hajj (pilgrimage). It is one of the sacred months that are mentioned in the verse: {Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.} [At-Tawbah: 36] Allah, the Almighty, has given these months preference over the rest of the months; thus, sinning becomes graver in these months, and they are granted a greater honor. Fighting was prohibited in the pre-Islamic Arabia during the sacred months. This was passed down to the Arabs from the religion of Ibrāhim (Abraham), peace be upon him. If a man from among them met his father's or brother's murderer, he would leave him unharmed. Then Islam came and prohibited fighting during these months.
