"Quwwat al-Irādah" (willpower) is one of the best, most virtuous, and most beneficial traits. Every person possesses two types of power: 1. Power of perception and observation, and the knowledge and awareness it entails. 2. Power of will and love, and the intent, determination, and action it entails. Doubts negatively affect the theoretical and knowledge-related power, while desires negatively affect the power of will and action. The perfection and uprightness of the heart are attained through utilizing these two powers in what benefits it. Perfect utilization of the power of knowledge lies in realizing and knowing the truth and distinguishing it from falsehood; and by utilizing the power of will and love in seeking the truth, acting upon it and abandoning falsehood. Some signs of having willpower: 1. Refraining from following one’s desires, and abandoning acts of disobedience and evil morals. 2. Seriousness, firmness, and diligence. 3. Hastening to good deeds and competing in righteousness, whether in words or actions. 4. Expecting good from Allah, relying on Him, and showing patience during calamities. Some reasons for having willpower are: authentic knowledge, soundness of the heart, adopting noble morals like certitude, patience, reliance on Allah, etc., and avoiding acts of disobedience.
