The Companions whom the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, assigned to write down and record the Qur’an that was revealed to him.
"Kuttāb al-Wahy" (scribes of the revelation): The Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, had "kuttāb" (scribes) who wrote down and recorded the verses of the revealed Qur’an. There were some well-known "kuttāb" among the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, entrusted with this task including: ‘Abdullah ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi as-Sarh al-Qurashi al-‘Āmiri, who was the first to write down the revelation for the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, in Makkah; ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān ibn Abi al-‘Ās al-Qurashi; ‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib al-Qurashi al-Hāshimi; Ubayy ibn Ka‘b ibn Qays al-Ansāri al-Khazraji; Zayd ibn Thābit al-Ansāri al-Khazraji; Mu‘āwiyah ibn Abi Sufyān al-Qurashi al-Umawi. These were not the only "kuttāb" writing down the revelation. There were other Companions as well, such as: Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, Ibn Mas‘ood, Az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām, ‘Āmir ibn Fuhayrah, ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās, Al-Mugheerah ibn Shu‘bah, ‘Abdullah ibn Rawāhah, Khālid ibn al-Waleed, Thābit ibn Qays, and others.
