Buried riches.
"Kanz" (pl. kunooz) (treasure) is divided into two categories in terms of their historical origin: 1. Islamic "kunooz": this category incorporates the "kunooz" that are most likely attributed to a Muslim owner, as they bear Islamic inscriptions such as the monotheistic testimony of faith or the name of a Muslim king or ruler and the like. 2. "Kunooz" of the pre-Islamic era: this category includes the buried "kunooz" that belong to the pre-Islamic era, regardless of whether they belonged to the people of ignorance who did not know anything about the divine religions and lived in the periods of the Messengers of Allah or to Jewish or Christian peoples. The "kunooz" of this category were buried by neither a Muslim nor a "Thimmi" (Jew or Christian who accepts to pay "jizyah" [per capita yearly tax] to the Muslim ruler and lives under his protection). 3 - The "kanz" of doubtful origin: this category incorporates the "kunooz" of which we do not know the truth regarding their origin. This is when there are no signs indicating the origin of the "kanz", such as gold nuggets, vessels, or ornaments (particular to a specific people), and they do not bear an impact or engraving revealing their origin, such as an ancient coin used in the pre-Islamic era which continued to be used after the advent of Islam. This description applies to a "kanz" when its origin cannot be specified by identifying the place where it was found.
"Kanz": gathering, hiding. Other meanings: buried riches, valuables.
