axioms (الْبَدَهِيَّات)

العقيدة أصول الفقه

التعريف :

Initial knowledge which one realises without having to exert one’s mind or acquire information, and with no need for proof, such as knowing that the sky is above us.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

Knowledge that is primordial and does not require reasoning or speculation.

الشرح المختصر :

"Badahiyyaat" (axioms) are evident matters that Allah equipped the intellects and common sense with, such as knowing that fire is hot. In other words, they are ideas and issues which are so clear that they impose themselves upon the mind. Their acquisition is not contingent on speculation, regardless of whether or not intuition or experience is required. In that case, "badahiyyaat" would be synonymous with necessities. "Badahiyyaat" could be more specific, as in perceiving hotness and coldness. Being axiomatic or speculative is not a concomitant attribute of an issue insomuch that all people are equal in realizing it. Rather, it is a relative matter that is contingent on people's condition. So anyone who realizes an issue without proof, such an issue is axiomatic for him. Meanwhile, anyone who needs reasoning, such an issue is speculative for him, and so on.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :

Badahiyyaat (sing. badahi): matters that are so evident that they do not require proof.
