The act that brings one closer to Allah
"Birr" (righteousness) is a word that encompasses all acts of benevolence and goodness, such as honoring one's parents, and obeying them, etc. Righteousness is of two categories: 1. Maintaining ties: which involves using one's position and spending one’s wealth, time, and the like in charitable ways for free, no matter whether the recipient is a relative or a non-relative. 2. Goodness: which involves righteous words and actions. Righteous words require one to say kind and good words, such as greeting someone or the like, whereas righteous actions include every righteous deed that Allah ordered and encouraged us to do, such as all physical acts of worship.
"Birr": obedience and benevolence. Opp. undutifulness and maltreatment. Other meanings: goodness, strengthening kinship ties.
The one who does righteous deeds which include kindness, generosity and whatever helps people and is good for them al-Barr, translated as ‘the beneficent’, is one of God’s fine names. It occurs once only in the Qur'an: ‘we used to pray to him: he is the beneficent, the ever merciful.’ (52: 28).
