المعنى الاصطلاحي

Keenness to acquire much worldly gains and to compete with others in that.

الشرح المختصر

"Takāthur" (accumulation of worldly gains) is keenness to have an abundance of worldly pleasures and gains, such as wealth, children, women, authority, knowledge, might, honor, and anything else that distracts one from engaging in Allah's obedience and working for the hereafter. Scholars divide "takāthur" into two types: 1. Blameworthy "takathur": It is increase in anything other than obedience to Allah and His Messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. 2. Praiseworthy "takāthur": It is to increase in goodness that leads to the pleasure of Allah.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر

"Takāthur": growing and increasing. Derived from "kathrah", which means abundance. Other meanings: boasting and vying, multiplying and reproducing. The origin of "takāthur" is "kathrah" (abundance), opp: "qillah" (scarcity). "Istikthār": asking to have much of something.
