المعنى الاصطلاحي

Exerting effort to attain what is beneficial in religious or worldly affairs.

الشرح المختصر

"Hirs" (keenness/assiduousness) is exerting effort to attain something desired, whether it is related to this world, like seeking sustenance, or to the Hereafter, like performing Hajj (pilgrimage). "Hirs" is one of the levels of reliance on Allah; the Muslim has to be keen on doing what is beneficial, and then rely on Allah and continue in his affairs while relying on Allah and submitting to Him, and never give up. If he does not reach his goal, he should be patient and submit all his affairs to Allah. "Hirs" can be either praiseworthy or blameworthy: 1. Blameworthy "hirs": is that which distracts one from fulfilling the commands of Allah Almighty, or drives him to strive to amass wealth in order to boast or show off. 2. Praiseworthy "hirs": i.e. keenness to fight in the way Allah, to seek knowledge, or to do more good deeds.
