Doubt coupled with internal anxiety and confusion, resulting in baseless ill assumption and accusation.
"Rayb" (skepticism) is a pathological psychological state that leads a person to harbor suspicions and delusions about the truth, and to level baseless accusations. It is a disease and flaw of the human self that weakens a person's faith in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and Destiny. It allows obsessive doubts (Waswaas) into the heart thus preventing it from attaining unshakable certitude (Yaqeen).
"Rayb": skepticism, doubt. It is derived from "irtiyaab" (anxiety and confusion). Opposite: "yaqyeen" and "tuma'neenah" (certainty and reassurance). Other meanings: assumption, delusion, suspicion, hesitation, misconception, obsessive doubts (Waswasah), need.
To entertain doubts. This is contrary to certainty. It could be entertaining doubts of knowledge or feeling the lack of certainty at heart. It is also said that the term rayb is more general than ‘doubt’.
