When this term is used unqualified, it refers to the choice between three actions mentioned in the Qur'anic verse 2: 196 which says: ‘if any of you is ill or suffers from an ailment of the head, he shall redeem himself by fasting, or alms, or sacrifice’. This refers to violating the restrictions of consecration during the hajj by shaving one’s head.
