"Marfou‘" (Hadith attributed to the Prophet, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him) is a category of Hadith in consideration of the ultimate end of the chain of narrators. It designates the sayings, deeds, implicit approvals, and physical or moral attributes which are ascribed or traced back to the Prophet, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him, by a Companion, a Tābi‘i, or someone of a lesser degree, whether the chain of narrators is connected or interrupted. "Marfou‘" Hadith has two types: 1. "Marfou‘ Tasreehi" (attributed to the Prophet, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him, by explicit statement): in this type, a saying, deed, or implicit approval is ascribed to the Prophet, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him, explicitly. For example, a Companion would report: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him, said: ..." 2. "Marfou‘ Hukmi": a statement by a Companion wherein a sign indicates that it originally comes from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah"s peace and blessings be upon him. For example, a Companion would say something that cannot be subject to personal opinion or independent reasoning, such as matters of the unseen.
"Marfou‘": prominent and expansive. It is derived from "raf‘", which means elevation and ascension. Opposite: "makhfoodh" (lowered). Other meanings: increased, brought close.
