"Istinbaat" (deductive reasoning) is the knowledge of how to derive Islamic rulings from the detailed evidence of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). This is based on knowing the prerequisites of deduction, such as giving precedence to clear cut texts over ones that can have multiple interpretations and to collectively contiguous narrations over isolated ones, knowing how to deal with conflicting pieces of evidence, knowing why certain evidence outweighs another, as well as other issues that are discussed in detail in the topic of "ijtihaad" (personal reasoning).
