‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Three men from those who were before you set out on a journey until night came and they had to enter a cave to take shelter therein. A rock rolled down from the mountain and blocked the entrance to the cave. They said: 'Nothing will save you from this rock except that you supplicate Allah by virtue of your righteous deeds.' Thereupon, one of them said: 'O Allah, I had parents who were old, and I used to offer them milk before any of my children or slaves. One day, I went far away in search of grazing and did not come back until they had slept. When I milked as usual and brought the drink I found them both asleep. I hated to disturb them and also disliked to give milk to my children or slaves before them. My children were crying out of hunger at my feet, but I waited with the bowl in my hand for them to wake up until the break of dawn. When they woke up, they drank their milk. O Allah, if I did so out of seeking Your pleasure, then relieve us from the distress caused by the rock.' The rock moved slightly but they were unable to get out. The next man said: 'O Allah, I had a female cousin whom I loved more than anyone else (in another version he said: whom I loved as much as a man can ever love a woman). I tried to have sexual intercourse with her but she refused. Hard pressed in a year of famine, she approached me. I gave her one hundred and twenty dinars on condition that she would submit herself to me. She agreed and when I sat between her legs (for sexual intercourse), she said: Fear Allah and do not break the seal except with its due right. I moved away from her despite my great passion for her, and I let her keep the money I had given her. O Allah, if I did that out of seeking Your pleasure, then, remove the distress we are in.' The rock moved aside but they were still unable to get out. The third man said: 'O Allah, I hired some laborers and paid them their wages except one of them who left without taking his dues. I invested his wages and it generated much money. After a long time, he came to me and said: O slave of Allah! Pay me my dues. I said: All that you see is yours including the camels, cattle, goats, and slaves. He said: O slave of Allah! Do not ridicule me. I assured him that I was not ridiculing him. So, he took all the things and went away. He spared nothing. O Allah, if I did so out of seeking Your pleasure, then relieve us of our distress.' The rock moved aside and they got out walking freely."

Three men set out on a journey. Seeking shelter for the night, they resorted to a cave. A big rock rolled down the mountain and blocked the entrance to the cave. They were not able to move the rock because of its enormous size. So, they decided that they would supplicate to Allah by virtue of the good deeds that they did. The first man mentioned that he had two elderly parents, and had some sheep that he used to take for grazing in the morning and then return at the end of the day. He used to milk the sheep and give the milk to his parents, then he would give the remaining milk to his family and slaves. He said: "One day, I went far away in search of grazing," then he came back and found that his parents had slept. He wondered whether he should let his family drink before his parents or wait until dawn. He chose to wait until dawn, and waited for his parents to wake up. When they woke up at dawn, they drank their milk, then he let his family and slaves drink too. The man then said: O Allah, If I was sincere in doing this, and did this for Your sake, then relieve us from our distress. The rock moved slightly, but not enough to enable them to get out of the cave. As for the second man, he supplicated to Allah by virtue of perfect chastity. He had a female paternal cousin whom he loved intensely, more than any man can ever love a woman. He wanted to have sexual intercourse with her unlawfully, and she refused. Thereafter, she became impoverished and needy, so she was forced to offer herself to commit fornication out of need, and this is not permissible, however this is what happened. She went to him, and he offered her a hundred and twenty dinars (gold coins) in return for having sexual intercourse with her, and she accepted only out of need. So, when he sat before her where a man sits to have sexual intercourse with his wife, she said these amazing words: "Fear Allah, and do not break the seal except with its due right." So he got up and moved away from her, although she was the most beloved person to him. However, fear of Allah overcame him and he left her the gold that he had given her. He then said: O Allah, if I did this for your sake, then remove the distress that we are in. The rock moved a little bit more, but they were still unable to get out. As for the third man, he supplicated to Allah by virtue of his honesty, righteousness, and sincerity in his actions. He recounted that he had hired workers to do some tasks. He gave them their wages, except for one man who left without taking his wages. So he invested his money in trade and otherwise until it increased into camels, cows, sheep, and slaves. After a long time, the worker came to him and said: O slave of Allah, pay me my dues. He said: All that you see is yours including the camels, cattle, goats, and slaves. The worker said: O slave of Allah, do not ridicule me. The wages that you owe me is a small amount, how can I have all of this that I see of camels, cows, sheep, and slaves. Do not mock me. He said: It is yours. So, the worker took everything and went away, leaving nothing for him. Then he said: O Allah, if I did so out of seeking Your pleasure, then relieve us of our distress. The rock moved aside and they got out walking freely because they supplicated to Allah by virtue of their righteous actions that they did sincerely for the sake of Allah, the Almighty.
