Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform Jihad against the polytheists with your riches, souls, and tongues."
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the believers to perform Jihad under the authority of their leader and under a unified Muslim banner. This Jihad must be performed solely to make the Word of Allah superior, and not for worldly gains. Jihad is to be performed: 1. Financially: by spending money on buying weapons and training warriors, etc. 2. In person: by engaging directly in fighting for those who are capable and qualified to do so. This is the fundamental element of Jihad. In this respect, Allah, the Almighty, says: ﴿And make Jihad with your wealth and your yourselves.﴾ [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 41] 3. Verbally: by calling to, spreading, and defending the religion of Allah; by debating with and refuting the allegations of the atheists; and by preaching Islam using all possible means and media to prove the truth to those who are obstinate. Words may also be used in subduing the enemy: ﴿Nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that is registered for them as a righteous deed﴾ [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 120]. In this respect, the speeches and poetry that motivate the believers to perform Jihad can be used, for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lampoon (in poetry) the Quraysh, for this is harsher on them than the shooting of arrows."
