Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) detained three persons on the Day of Badr until they were killed: Al-Mut‘im ibn ‘Adyy, An-Nadr ibn al-Hārith, and ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt. When he ordered that An-Nadr be killed, Al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad said: "That is my prisoner, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "He said about the Book of Allah and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) what he said." He said that twice or thrice. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, enrich Al-Miqdād from your bounty." Al-Miqdād had arrested An-Nadr as a prisoner of war.
This Hadīth illustrates that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) killed three infidels from the captives of Badr in detention, for they were belligerent disbelievers who harmed the Muslims. They were: 1. Tu‘aymah ibn ‘Adyy (rather than Al-Mut‘im ibn ‘Adyy), 2. An-Nadr ibn al-Hārith, 3. ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt. They were all from Quraysh. They used to harm the Messenger and the Muslims in Makkah. So when Allah gave victory to the Prophet in Badr, he took seventy of their leaders as prisoners and killed seventy in the battlefield. Among the prisoners were these three. The point of this tradition is that the ruler may kill prisoners of war if he thinks that it is useful to do so.
