‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to pay great attention to the eye and both ears, and not to offer as sacrifice a one-eyed animal, an animal with a slit which leaves something hanging at the front or back of the ear, or with a lengthwise slit or a perforation in the ear.
‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to check the sacrificial animals carefully upon buying or slaughtering them. The animal's body should be sound as a whole, even such small organs like the eye and the ear. All body organs should be free of any defect, whether congenital or caused by a human. To that effect, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from offering as sacrifice a one-eyed animal, an animal with a split ear, whether from the front or the back, or an animal with a hole or slit in the ear. This is because a sacrificial animal has to be free of defects and aspects of deficiency.
