Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, you recite this verse: ﴿O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.﴾ [Sūrat al-Mā'idah: 105], but I have heard Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When people see an oppressor but do not prevent him committing sin, it is likely that Allah will punish them all.'"

شرح الحديث :

Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) once said: "O people, you recite this verse: ﴿O you who believe, you have the responsibility of yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are guided﴾ [Sūrat al-Mā'idah: 105], and you understand from it that if one is guided, misguidance of others will not harm him because he himself is on the straight path, and if he is on the straight path, then Allah, the Almighty, knows how to deal with others. However, such understanding is not correct, because Allah has stipulated for guided one to be saved from the harm of others' misguidance, as He said: ﴿Those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are guided.﴾ Part of the guidance mentioned in the verse involves enjoining good and forbidding evil. In other words, it is necessary that we enjoin good and forbid evil if we want to be saved from the bad consequences of others' misguidance. For this reason Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) quoted the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "When people see an evil and do not forbid it or prevent the oppressor from doing it, it is likely that Allah will punish them all." It means that misguidance of others does affect the guided people who see the misguided person while they neither enjoin him to do good nor forbid him from doing evil. In this case, Allah's punishment is likely to overtake both of them: the doer of evil and the one who does not forbid it.
