Abu Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts a day for the sake of Allah, Allah will place between him and Hellfire a trench as wide as the distance between the heavens and earth."

شرح الحديث :

Whoever fasts a day for the sake of Allah, seeking by it the reward of Allah the Exalted, Allah will place between him and Hellfire a trench, i.e. a strong impregnable barrier that outstretches for a distance equal to that between the heavens and earth, which is the distance of five hundred years, as stated in the Hadīth of Al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd all-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "We were with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he asked: 'Do you know what the distance between the heavens and earth is?' We said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' So he said: 'Between them is the distance of five hundred years of walking.'"
