‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Reviling a Muslim is disobedience and fighting him is disbelief."
This Hadīth is proof of the great right that a Muslim has over his fellow Muslim. The Muslim who verbally abuses a fellow Muslim is accused of impiety and defiant disobedience of Allah. Also, the Muslim who fights a fellow Muslim is accused of disbelief that takes him out of the fold of Islam. This is the case if he believes that fighting a Muslim is lawful, but if he fights a fellow Muslim for a personal motive or for competition for worldly gains without believing that his blood is lawful to shed, then this is an act of minor disbelief that does not take him out of the fold of Islam. Calling him a disbeliever is a form of hyperbole to stress the warning against fighting a fellow Muslim.
