Al-Mughīrah ibn Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I poured water for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wherewith he performed ablution in the battle of Tabūk. He wiped over the top and the bottom of the leather socks."
In this Hadīth, Al-Mughīrah ibn Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported something that took place in the battle of Tabūk; he said: "I poured water for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to make ablution with;" meaning: I poured the water on his hands. His statement: "He wiped over the top and the bottom of his leather socks." This is a clarification of the spot of the leather socks which one should wipe over, and that one should wipe over the top and the bottom of the leather socks. However, this Hadīth has some aspects of weakness. Wiping over the top of the leather socks as well as the bottom is not established by way of an authentic Hadīth that is directly attributed to the Prophet(may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Rather, it has been established that ‘Ali and Al-Mughīrah reported via a Marfū‘ Hadīth with a good chain of narration that one should wipe over the top of the leather socks only. So the preponderant view is that the place of wiping over the leather socks is the top, not the bottom.
