Any creation that is worshiped besides Allah.
الشرح المختصر
"Wathan" is a collective name for everything that is worshiped besides Allah, whether it has a human form, such as prophets and pious people, or not, such as trees, stones, and structures. The one who worships or supplicates other than Allah has taken what he worships as a "wathan" thus taking himself out of Islam.
التعريف اللغوي المختصر
"Wathan": an idol or stone that is worshiped; also a statue or a cross. "Wathaniyyah": idolatry; idol and stone worship. It is derived from "wathn", i.e. permanence and perpetuity. Other meanings: strength, multitude.
