المعنى الاصطلاحي

The signs with which Allah, the Exalted, supported His Messengers to prove their truthfulness.

الشرح المختصر

"Āyāt al-anbiyā’" (Prophets' Signs) are the signs whereby Allah makes His servants know that He has sent them the messenger supported with those signs and that He commands them to obey that messenger and follow him. Another definition is that they are what Allah allows to occur at the hands of His messengers and prophets of supernatural occurrences that humans are not capable of producing; e.g. transforming a stick into a serpent that moves and slides. These signs are great proofs of Allah's Lordship and divinity and of the truthfulness of His prophets in regards to the message of monotheism to which they called their nations. The term "āyah" is more precise and more accurate because it was used in the Qur’an, as opposed to "mu‘jizah", which is neither mentioned in the Qur’an nor in the Sunnah.
