"Ibdāl" (replacing) in its general sense means to replace something with something else or substituting it for something else. Muslim jurists give an example for "ibdāl" in the recitation of the Qur’an by the "lisp" if one pronounces "rā’" as "lām" or "ghayn", or changes the "seen" into "thā’" and the like.
