“At-Tarwiyah” (quenching thirst) is a term commonly used jointly with the word ‘day’. Together, they refer to the eighth day of Dhul-Hijjah. Pilgrims, on this day, move towards Mina. It was named the Day of “Tarwiyah” for two reasons: 1. Because people drink, water their camels and animals, and bring water along with them before heading towards ‘Arafah, since there used to be no water in ‘Arafah at that time. 2. Because the pilgrims would ponder about their pilgrimage and mentally prepare for it during this time. It is said that Prophet Ibrāhim (Abraham), peace be upon him, saw himself slaughtering his son in a dream during this night. He then began to wonder whether it was merely a dream or it was a revelation from Allah, hence they named it the day of “At-tarwiyah”.
