Controlling the tongue by refraining from excessive swearing, avoiding breaking oaths, and observing the due expiation upon breaking an oath.
"Hifzh-ul-aymaan", or guarding oaths, is one of the characteristics of the pious believers. Many people take oaths, yet many of them are careless about the requirements of an oath, so they do not guard their oaths or commit themselves to them. Guarding an oath comprises three things: 1. Refraining from making an oath except when there is a need for it. 2. Guarding the oath against breaking it, except when a person swears to not do a good deed or to do a bad deed. In this case, it is better to break the oath and offer expiation for it. 3. Offering expiation for breaking an oath. "Hinth" (breaking an oath) means that a person does what he has sworn not to do, or fails to do what he has sworn to do.
