Placing the deceased in the grave and covering him with dust.
"Dafn" (burial) is one of the rights of the dead over the living which Allah has honored mankind with. It means burying the body of the deceased in a hole under the ground so that it would not be dug up by wild animals and the stench of decomposition would not be felt, so as to preserve the honor of the deceased and not harm the living. The manner of burial is to place the deceased in the grave on his right side facing the "qiblah" (prayer direction), and the person placing him in the grave should say: "Bismillah wa ‘ala millati rasoolillah" (in the name of Allah and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah), then he unties the knots of the shroud; places bricks over the grave; and fills the holes or cracks with mud, leaves, or other to prevent dust from falling onto the deceased.
"Dafn": covering, concealing. "Dafn" of a dead means burying him.
