Obligatory purification
(طَهارَةٌ واجِبَةٌ)

من موسوعة المصطلحات الإسلامية

المعنى الاصطلاحي

Removing what prevents one from praying of impurity or "hadath" (state of ritual impurity) with water or what substitutes it, such as soil/dust/sand or the like (by making "tayammum" [dry ablution]).

الشرح المختصر

"Tahaarah waajibah" (obligatory purification) is the elimination of any impediment to prayer; i.e. removing what prevents the validity of prayer. Such impediments include minor "hadath" (like the emission of urine or wind or the like), which are eliminated by ablution, as well as major "hadath" (like menses or ejaculation or the like), which are eliminated by "ghusl" (ritual bath). This also includes that all impurities, like urine or the like, be eliminated by removing them from the body, the clothes, and the place of prayer so that the one who is obligated to pray is allowed to do so. "Tahaarah waajibah" may be achieved by water, dust, or what is similar to dust, thus it was classified into water-based "tahaarah waajibah" and dust-based "tahaarah waajibah".
